For years I’ve sensed that something was wrong. This something is difficult to articulate because it was a constant inexplicable feeling and seemed all encompassing. I lived in an invariable state of anxiety, dizziness, confusion and slight detachment. Augmenting to this sense; was the painful reality of daily nausea, neck pain, and pounding headaches in my temples.
Many doctors concluded that this pain was psychosomatic and suggested to reduce stress and sleep more. After working hard to follow through on these orders, I experienced marginal improvements. I still had headaches, dizziness and life still seemed cloudy. After years of trying to figure out what was wrong, I became burned out.
It wasn’t until I worked with individuals diagnosed with a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) at my internship until I realized we had many similar symptoms. I began to understand that the car accident I was in nearly six years ago was impacting my life. Though I sensed something was wrong after “recovering” from the accident; I was told that my CT scans were normal. Desperate for help, I called on some favors from colleagues and was able to get the referrals I’ve needed for years.
I was hazy and confused when I arrived at Dr. Debbie’s office-not fully aware of why I was referred to an eye doctor. At the time my prescription was less than a year old. However, Dr. Debby instantly put me to ease as she lit up the office with her enthusiasm and passion.
She asked to hear my story-not even realizing I had one to tell. After years of struggling to understand myself, I finally felt understood. After she diagnosed me with Vertical Heterophoria secondary to a TBI, I was shocked. I would have never guessed that what I sensed was wrong was related to my sense of sight.
After getting my first pair of prism glasses from Dr. Debby, I began to see instant changes. I felt more calm and aware of my surroundings. My nausea, dizziness and headaches dissipated. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover that my reading comprehension and speed drastically improved. I was ecstatic to report to Dr. Debby that I read 5 books in a month!
I genuinely didn’t know life could be this good. Since having these glasses my quality of life has drastically improved. Now that I’m not nauseous I am able to eat better, I no longer need to take Ibuprofen for headaches, and I am much calmer. Nearly every aspect of my life has improved. Where I was previously feeling helpless, I am now feeling hopeful and excited about my future. I feel very blessed to have Dr. Debby as one of my doctors.
